Honey fungus and the diseases behind sudden tree decline

A myth-and-management guide to honey fungus and the other diseases that make a healthy-looking tree collapse across the Leeds to York corridor.

If a mature tree in your Leeds or York garden has suddenly gone into decline for no obvious reason, honey fungus is one of the first things a good arborist will check for. It is the most common cause of sudden tree death in UK gardens.

Honey fungus is not a myth and it is not a death sentence for your whole garden either. This guide explains what it actually is, how to recognise it, and what genuinely helps, from the person who does the digging.

What honey fungus actually is

Honey fungus is the common name for several species of Armillaria, a group of fungi that attack and kill the roots of woody plants and then feed on the dead wood.

What makes it different from most tree diseases uk gardeners worry about is how it moves. It spreads underground through rhizomorphs, tough black strands that look and feel like bootlaces.

These rhizomorphs grow out from an infected root or stump through the soil, sometimes travelling several metres, until they reach a fresh root to colonise. That is why one dead tree can be followed by another a season later.

How to identify honey fungus

No single sign is proof on its own. Arborists look for a combination, ideally confirmed at the base of the trunk and in the soil around it.

The white mycelial sheet is the most telling. Peel back a flap of bark at the base and you may find a creamy-white fan of fungus that smells faintly of mushrooms.

The toadstools appear only in autumn and only in some years, so their absence proves nothing. The rhizomorphs in the soil are the underground giveaway.

Which species are vulnerable, and which resist

Some trees and shrubs are far more likely to be killed than others. The table below is a general guide, not a guarantee, because vigour and site conditions matter enormously.

I want to be honest about that right-hand column. More resistant does not mean immune. A stressed oak or beech on a compacted, waterlogged site can still be taken by honey fungus.

If you are replanting after an outbreak, favour the resistant list, but treat good drainage, mulch and watering in dry spells as part of the defence too.

Why there is no cure, and what actually works

There is no chemical treatment approved for honey fungus in the UK. Fungicides do not reach the fungus where it lives, and no injection or spray will save an infected tree.

Control is physical, and it works best when you act early rather than after a whole row has gone.

Sooty bark disease of sycamore

Honey fungus is not the only cause of sudden decline we see across the corridor. Sooty bark disease of sycamore, caused by Cryptostroma corticale, has become more common in hot, dry summers.

It shows as dying crowns and, tellingly, patches of bark that lift to reveal a sooty black spore layer underneath. Wilting foliage and long dead strips down the trunk are common.

There is a genuine health note here. The spores can affect people, causing a lung reaction in some who breathe in large amounts, so an infected sycamore is a professional removal job with the right precautions, not a weekend chainsaw task.

Bleeding canker of horse chestnut

If you have a horse chestnut with dark, weeping patches on the trunk or main limbs, that is likely bleeding canker. The lesions ooze a rusty or black liquid that stains the bark.

Not every affected tree dies. Some wall the infection off and recover, others decline over several years, so a horse chestnut with bleeding canker is worth monitoring rather than felling on sight.

When it is not honey fungus at all

This is the honest bit. A tree in sudden decline has plenty of possible causes, and jumping straight to honey fungus can cost you a tree that might have been saved.

Ash dieback looks like sudden collapse too, and it is now widespread across Yorkshire. If your declining tree is an ash, read our ash dieback guide first.

Drought stress and root damage from building work, trenching or compaction also mimic disease. A proper tree survey at the site is what separates one cause from another.

The difference matters because the response differs completely. Honey fungus means barriers and resistant replanting; drought means watering and mulch; ash dieback means a safety-led decision.

Which trees resist honey fungus?
Yew, box, holly, oak, ash, beech and tanoak are generally more resistant, while privet, rhododendron, apple, birch, willow, cedar and Leyland cypress are highly susceptible. Resistant does not mean immune; a stressed tree of any species can succumb, so vigour matters as much as choice of species.
Can honey fungus spread to my neighbour's garden?
Yes. Rhizomorphs travel through soil and can cross boundaries to reach new hosts, so honey fungus is often a shared problem along a row of gardens. A root barrier along the boundary and removing infected material are the practical defences. It helps to talk to neighbours early rather than after a tree has already died.
