Tree work across York and its villages.

York is unusual in just how much of it is protected. The city has one of the largest concentrations of conservation-area designations in the north of England: the central historic core, plus Clifton, Bootham, the Groves, Bishophill and many of the village cores around the edge. Inside any of those, six weeks’ written notice to City of York Council is required before most tree work can start, and Tree Preservation Orders are common on the mature limes, planes, beeches and horse chestnuts that line the older streets.

The mix of tight medieval-centre access and large mature trees means most jobs here are sectional dismantling and careful crown work rather than straightforward felling: there is rarely the room to drop anything whole, and a lot of the work is over walls, ginnels and neighbouring gardens. Out toward Poppleton, Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe and Haxby the plots open up, the gardens get bigger, and the work shifts toward crown reductions, deadwooding and the occasional large removal.

We are based in Garforth, a straight run east on the A64, so York and the villages along the way are firmly inside our usual patch. Jack handles consent applications to City of York Council from start to finish. If you are not sure whether your tree is protected, use the postcode checker, or send us the address and we will look it up before we quote.

Questions we get asked

Do I need permission to remove a tree in York?
Very possibly. Large parts of York sit within conservation areas, where six weeks’ written notice to City of York Council is needed before most work, and many individual trees carry Tree Preservation Orders requiring prior consent. We check the planning status of every tree before quoting and handle the application for you.
How much does a tree surgeon cost in York?
It depends on the tree, the access and how the arisings are dealt with: a small crown lift is very different to a large sectional take-down over a wall. We give a free site visit and a written, fixed quote with no obligation, so you know the price before any work starts.
Which York areas do you cover?
The whole of York and the surrounding villages, including Poppleton, Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe, Haxby, Acomb, Dunnington and Strensall. If you are just outside, ask anyway; we travel the A64 corridor regularly.
