Tree work across Harrogate and its villages.

Harrogate is a Victorian spa town with an unusual amount of protected greenery for its size. The Stray, almost 200 acres of common grassland ringing the town centre, is safeguarded by its own Act of Parliament and lined with mature avenues of lime, cherry and chestnut, and the town carries several conservation areas: the central Montpellier and Low Harrogate streets, the Duchy Estate of large Victorian and Edwardian villas, and the older village cores absorbed into the town as it grew. Inside any conservation area, six weeks’ written notice to North Yorkshire Council is required before most tree work, and Tree Preservation Orders are common on the cedars, beeches, limes and big ornamental specimens that fill the older spa-town gardens.

That mix shapes the work. The Duchy Estate and the roads bordering the Stray and Valley Gardens hold some of the largest private trees in the district, where the right answer is usually careful crown reduction, thinning and deadwooding rather than removal. The tighter central streets call for sectional dismantling and rigging, with rarely the room to drop anything whole, and much of it worked over walls and neighbouring gardens. Out west into HG3, toward Beckwithshaw, Hampsthwaite, Birstwith and the edge of Nidderdale, the plots open up and the work shifts toward bigger crown work, hedge reductions, storm clearance off the more exposed land and the occasional large take-down.

Harrogate is a straight run north from our Garforth base, up the A1 to Wetherby and across, so the town and the surrounding villages are firmly inside our usual patch. Jack handles consent applications to North Yorkshire Council from start to finish. If you are not sure whether your tree is protected, especially in the conservation areas or near the Stray, use the postcode checker or send us the address and we will look it up before we quote.

Questions we get asked

Do I need permission to remove a tree in Harrogate?
Very possibly. Large parts of Harrogate sit within conservation areas, including the central streets and the Duchy Estate, where six weeks’ written notice to North Yorkshire Council is needed before most work, and many of the mature spa-town garden trees carry Tree Preservation Orders. We check the planning status of every tree before quoting and handle the application for you.
Who deals with tree permissions in Harrogate now?
North Yorkshire Council. It became the planning authority for the Harrogate area in April 2023, when Harrogate Borough Council was abolished, so conservation-area notices and TPO consents are handled through North Yorkshire now. We confirm the status and handle any notice or consent application on your behalf.
Which areas around Harrogate do you cover?
The whole of Harrogate and the surrounding villages, including Knaresborough, Pannal, Starbeck, Bilton, Killinghall, Beckwithshaw and Hampsthwaite, out toward the edge of Nidderdale. If you are just outside, ask anyway; we travel the area regularly.
