Wakefield is its own metropolitan district with its own planning authority (Wakefield Council, not Leeds), so conservation area notices and Tree Preservation Order consents here go through Wakefield's arboricultural team. The city has several conservation areas, including the fine Georgian streets around St John's and St John's Square, the historic centre, and the older parts of Sandal and Walton. Inside any of those, written notice is required before most tree work, and TPOs are common on the mature limes, beeches and horse chestnuts in the older gardens.

There is a real mix of work across the district. The Georgian and Victorian properties around St John's and Thornes have large, long-established garden trees that suit careful crown reductions and deadwooding rather than removal. Out toward Sandal, Walton, Crofton and Newmillerdam the plots open up, and the work shifts toward bigger crown work, hedge reductions and the occasional large sectional take-down. The green corridors through Thornes Park, Pugneys and Newmillerdam Country Park carry mature trees right up to the surrounding gardens.
